Residents in Surrey Heath are being warned to make sure they keep car keys safe and out of sight following an attempted burglary at a Windlesham property this week.

The incident happened in the early hours of yesterday morning (Tuesday, 9 March) when would-be thieves repeatedly struck at a front door in a bid to gain entry to the house. The offenders managed to smash the leaded glass and were stopped in their tracks when disturbed by the occupant. They made off on foot empty handed after causing £600 worth of damage.

The borough’s Crime Reduction Advisor PC Debbie Reece said the attempted burglary serves as a warning to everyone in the locality to ensure they do not leave anything that might tempt a thief into an opportunist break-in.

She explained: “In this particular instance although the front door had been securely locked, the key was clearly visible and on the same key ring there was an identifiable car key. Members of the public should take care to ensure they take keys out of locks and hide any car keys away from doors or windows. It is all too easy to come in after a hard day and just put keys down on the nearest surface but it is essential that people think about what they’re doing – just placing keys out of sight or taking them upstairs at night with you could be the simple precaution needed to prevent a burglary.”

The call comes following a recent spate of burglaries in the area in which homes were broken into and mainly cash stolen.
